Hero of the Month • May 2013

Our Hero of the Month is designed to honor individuals in Pittsburg who help make our community great. Read on at the end of this post for instructions for nominating your Hero!

Joanna Rhodes
Hero of the Month
May 2013

Looking for a way to get your family involved in a fun, new activity that will challenge and inspire them? Our May Hero of the Month, Joanna Rhodes, is the Race Director for the Big Brothers Big Sisters Get Fit TRYathlon and 5K/10K, and she encourages local families to participate in this unique event.

After participating in triathlons and other similar events herself, Rhodes decided she wanted to bring this kind of race to the Pittsburg area in order to encourage others to try something new and provide an opportunity for mentoring kids. This year marks the fourth year for the TRYathlon, plus the 5K race, which was added last year, and this year’s new addition – a 10K race. The TRYathlon event also includes a clinic, where kids learn the basics of training for and competing in the swimming, biking, and running portions of the race. The post race celebration will feature local business vendors, a jump house, the Jolly Trolley, and more.

Coordinating this event involves setting up registration, finding insurance, determining location and course, setting up advertising and marketing promotions, choosing t-shirts, swag items, and medals, finding sponsorship, coordinating with Pittsburg State University and the City of Pittsburg, finding volunteers to assist with race-day activities, and much more.

Rhodes’s favorite part of the TRYathlon is seeing kids come through the finish line – seeing how happy they are and hearing their excitement about finishing. She encourages you and your family to participate this year to experience this inspiring competition for yourself. For more information and to register, visit the Get Fit TRYathlon & Get Fit 5K/10K Facebook page. The kids’ clinic will take place June 1, and race day is June 2. Spectators are encouraged. All proceeds benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters.

Hero of the Month • September 2012

Our Hero of the Month is designed to honor individuals in Pittsburg who help make our community great. Read on at the end of this post for instructions for nominating your Hero!

Pastor Kevin Arensman
Hero of the Month
September 2012
Fall and winter are seasons when many families enjoy huge feasts during the holiday season. But what if your family couldn’t afford such a basic necessity as food?

Pastor Kevin Arensman of the First Christian Church in Pittsburg is giving back to the Pittsburg and Crawford County Community by making it possible for underprivileged families in our area to avoid hunger. As founder and chair of the Citywide Food Drive and in association with the Wesley House, Pastor Kevin will once again this year help to provide for our local families in need – but he needs your help!

The Citywide Food Drive utilizes volunteer groups to canvas the city of Pittsburg to collect nonperishable food items that are then taken to the Wesley House to be distributed to disadvantaged families in Pittsburg and throughout Crawford County.

The goal of the Citywide Food Drive is to get as much food to as many hungry people as possible. So how can you help? The Citywide Food Drive is in need of volunteer groups both to deliver grocery sacks to contributing households and to pick up filled grocery sacks the following weekend. Volunteer groups range from student groups to scouting groups to civic groups and beyond, but can even be a group of five or more individuals who are not associated with an organization. Citywide Food Drive pickup day will be September 30, and volunteer groups are essential for this step of the outreach. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Pastor Kevin at (620) 249-6903 for more information.

Pastor Kevin Arensman is our Hero for his effort toward feeding hungry Pittsburg families. Pastor Kevin, along with numerous volunteer groups, has been helping our community since 2009, and is hoping to make an even bigger difference this year!

Hero of the Month • August 2012

PittCafe would like to introduce a new program – our Hero of the Month! Designed to honor individuals in Pittsburg who help make our community great. Read on at the end of this post for instructions for nominating your Hero!

Jim Buche
Hero of the Month
August 2012
Our very first Hero of the Month, Jim Buche, has made a huge difference in our community in the past 12 years in the local organization Pittsburg Beautiful. Buche has been the organization’s Treasurer for the past 11 years and has served as the Pittsburg Beautiful President for the past 3 years. In these roles, he has taken on a number of projects that have beautified our city in a big way.

When Buche and his wife moved back to Pittsburg from Kansas City in 1998, they noticed that the downtown area could use a lot of improvement. Soon after, he found out about the Pittsburg Beautiful organization and decided to get involved.

You may recognize many of the projects Pittsburg Beautiful, in coordination with the City of Pittsburg Department of Parks and Recreation and the Zone 6 Garden Club, has spearheaded – for example, the welcome signs at the north and south ends of town and at 20th and the bypass, the 36 urns downtown filled with beautiful flowers, the flagpole display in front of the YMCA, and many, many other areas in town. In order to take on these projects, Pittsburg Beautiful funds the purchase of plants, flowers, and mulch and takes care of the flowers and plants by watering and weeding.

Looking forward, Pittsburg Beautiful plans to put in shelters and bathrooms with showers at the RV park for bikers driving through.

Buche would like to impart the following advice to help all of us keep Pittsburg beautiful – please don’t litter and pick up after others if they choose to litter.

Jim Buche is our Hero for showing his dedication to the betterment of our community through countless hours volunteering and holding leadership roles in the Pittsburg Beautiful organization.
